Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) was born in a family of the high French bourgeoisie. At eighteen he was expelled from the seminar in which he was studying for belonging to a libertine society of students. He studies law in Paris and enters as an official in the Ministry of Navy, since he will abandon himself to devote himself to literature in 1880. In the next ten years Maupassant publishes between one and two weekly stories in the magazines Gil Blas and Le Gaulis. In 1892 he is admitted to Dr. Blanche's mental clinic, where he dies the following year after suffering progressive delusions and general paralysis due to his youth syphilis.
