Knut Hamsun, the Norwegian writer who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1920, remains an unknown author to many readers. This is largely due to the political stance he took in the later years of his life. Despite all this, he had a considerable influence on writers such as Stefan Zweig, Franz Kafka, Hermann Hesse, Ernest Hemingway, Henry Miller, Juan Rulfo, and María Luisa Bombal, among others.

In September 1899, after living in Finland for a year and with the help of a state grant, Hamsun embarked on a journey from Russia to Turkey through the Caucasus. Part of this journey was documented in the short story "In Wonderland."

This book contains magnificent and detailed descriptions of the rural environment surrounding the protagonist, as well as intellectual musings, profound passages of introspection, and nostalgic evocations of the distant days when, as a child, he herded cattle in northern Norway. The boundaries between reality, dreams, and fantasy blur, and through an informal and lighthearted style—with a touch of humor that is quite distinctive—Hamsun manages to portray the customs, characters, and settings of a time and a region.
