The works that made David Hume famous as a writer during his lifetime are not the same ones that have subsequently consolidated his reputation as a philosopher. Among the first are these Essays, the preparation and revision of which occupied Hume throughout his adult life until his death, throughout successive editions, corrected and expanded personally by him. The words of his friend John Holme sum up the interest of this work well: "His Essays are both popular and philosophical; in them are united, in a rare and happy way, scientific depth and good literary style".
