After finishing high school, the young and handsome Frédéric Moreau travels by boat from Paris to his hometown before returning to the capital to study law and try to ascend socially. On board he will meet Mrs. Arnoux, married, older than him and resident in Paris, which will become his great impossible love. The year is 1840 and winds of change and modernization are blowing in France.
