There is a beautiful Latin word to describe materials from old buildings reused in later constructions. That word, spolia, could characterize what the Middle Ages essentially was. The foundations that supported the ancient world were used to build, together with the foundations of Christianity and Islam, a rich, colorful, different society that was at the same time very similar to modern-day human beings. Both archeology and written sources have built bridges to show us the daily life of these people and the political, economic, social and religious changes that left their mark on their daily lives.
