In February 1701, Felipe de Borbón, just seventeen years old, entered Madrid and was crowned king. In this way, the French Bourbon dynasty began its long reign over the Hispanic universe, which would last until 1808 with the reigns of
Charles III and his son Charles IV.

During this period, the Spanish crown undertook changes in the way it administered its vast American possessions called the Bourbon reforms. These reforms responded to the dynasty's desire to regain the threads of power in America.
—particularly in New Spain, the richest possession—thus beginning a process of modernization that would last practically the entire century.

In America the reforms were applied to the viceregal government structures. Privileges were diluted and culture spread. The crown sent enlightened figures from Europe to develop science, arts and industry. For their part, the Americans adopted the new enlightened ideas, which turned out to be emancipatory and revolutionary; The Creoles realized that Spanish rule was plagued by abuses and defects. Thus, the period of the Bourbon reforms in New Spain was not only important for economic growth and opening to the Atlantic world; but it was also a period of crisis for a society that realized that it was different.
