Robert Castel was in Argentina on several occasions. From one of these visits, a fluid, rich and permanent dialogue was established between Robert Castel and Topia magazine. One of the consequences of this process was the first edition of this book that sold out in a short time.

Since then, we have seen the process of disaffiliation and marginalization grow around the world without pause. One only has to look at the problem posed by migrations to Europe, from Africa, and from South America to the United States. Also how the number of young people without work or with precarious work increases to chilling percentages, all this validates the validity of the concepts - tools that this work develops.

In this new edition, a chapter is added that includes dialogues with Robert Castel in which he delves into his concepts. In this sense, he clarifies how he proposed "the notion of 'disaffiliation' instead of 'exclusion' because it seems to me that it is a notion that tries, that aims to question trajectories and not states. If we have people in difficulty: where do they come from, what has been their journey? From what collective entity have these people separated, from what more installed situations? The notion of disaffiliation can have psychological or psychoanalytic echoes, but what interests me for sociological work is that it allows us to question more encompassing ruptures, for me the phenomenon of detachment or 'disengagement' from the world of work is essential in this. But this being outside of work implies having problems, problems in relational insertion: for example, in family life. Aspects that are more subjective and personal of disaffiliation, which have affective connotations in terms of anguish, loss of references, etc., can be analyzed in a concrete way. What I proposed to call 'negative individualism' is a phenomenon that has appeared and is growing alarmingly."
