These essays are part of the legacy of the long and fruitful academic life of Gabriela Mora, professor of Hispanic American literature in the United States. This book brings together some of her essays, highlighting above all two fields in which she has been recognized as an attentive critic of the theory and analysis of narrative and as a pioneer in the feminist reading of literature. Mora's contribution stands out for its innovation, sensitivity and sharpness, both at the time of its publication and today. More than a compilation of texts, what we have is a critical overview of some of the most important aspects of Latin American literary creation and, in retrospect, a contribution to the history of criticism about authors such as Gabriela Mistral, Elena Garro or Cristina Peri Rossi, and authors such as García Márquez and Rulfo, whose work the intelligent reading of the essayist has enlightened. In these texts, the sharp gaze of her author stands out and the careful analysis of her works, in which she enhances both the aesthetic pleasure and the ethical or political sense of many of them.
