What you see in this book lives in the intricate world that is built around the songs, and that the songs inhabit. It is the material from which the official work is born and fed.
When I talk about the official work I mean the song or the book or the sheet music that is published and ends up in the hands of the fans. The fans become its custodians. they own it. Yet behind the song is an enormous amount of secondary stuff: drawings, maps, lists, scribbles, photos, charts, collages, and sketches, things that are the artist's property, secret, and unfinished.
These things should not be considered works of art so much as the hallucinated and compulsive superstructure that gives birth to the song or the book or the script or the score. They are a support system of tangential and manic information.
