In Vincent Van Gogh the relationship between existence and work, between mental illness and creation has provided material for a long tradition of interpretation, especially psychoanalytic. In this context, Massimo Recalcati relates melancholy and painting with respect to the autonomy of art regarding the work of the very famous painter. Thus, the author shows us how Van Gogh's paintings constitute the extreme effort of drawing, through light and color, directly the absolute, the thing itself. But the consecration of art, which at the beginning had saved him from the original melancholy, is revealed to be what plunges him into the depths of madness.
