In the autumn of 1631, the New Spain fleet set sail from the port of Veracruz. Thirteen ships were headed for Havana, the first stop on their final route to Seville. A storm thwarted their destination, and several ships were wrecked. The galleon Nuestra Señora del Juncal, laden with treasure and hope, met its tragic end in the turbulent waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
