These civilizations contributed their art and ideas to form, along with other peoples, an area of high culture in Mesoamerica. However, there is knowledge of the existence of “pre-Olmec” cultures, of which intact signs of their development have been found, more than four thousand years ago, in the remains of ceramic vessels engraved with images of corn, the Sun, the sky, the lightning and the earth. In all these vestiges there are representations of Jaguar children; clawed feet; highly stylized hands, and huge stone heads with Negroid features and slanted eyes. These ancient civilizations were located in the current states of Tabasco, Veracruz and Oaxaca.
