The mutations or transformations that occur in life's development involve changes in both form and being, implying that a change in form can also signify a transformation in being. Malabou attempts to conceive of a radical metamorphosis, that is, precisely, the creation of a new person, an unprecedented form of life, one that has nothing in common with the identity that precedes it. In other words, it is a risky attempt to question the substantialist assumption that has been the preferred companion for the concept of metamorphosis in the West, thus contradicting the classical formula that states: form is transformed, but substance remains.
