History does not repeat itself, but it does teach.
Both Nazism and Communism were reactions to globalization - to the real or imagined inequalities it created, and to the apparent powerlessness of democracies to deal with them. They were movements in which a leader or a party claimed to give the people a voice, promised to protect them from existing global threats, and rejected reason in favor of myth. European history shows us that societies can break down, democracies can fall, ethics can break down, and ordinary people can find themselves in unimaginable situations. Today it would be very useful for us to understand why.
