Throughout this book, Mario Edmundo Chávez Tortolero offers a novel and suggestive interpretation of the thought of David Hume and Don Quixote, read and cited by him, being a very influential work in the England of his time.

The author aims to show that the influence of Don Quixote on Hume's thought is possible, probable and plausible, for which he offers various arguments.

He develops his interpretation by showing that a fragment taken from Don Quixote is indispensable for the postulation of the criterion of taste in Hume's aesthetic theory. Likewise, it shows how, based on the elements of the Science of human nature and especially the concept of imagination, it is possible to make a coherent interpretation of Don Quixote, where it is suggested that the relationship between Cervantes and Hume goes beyond the scope of esthetic.

Thus, he detects a similarity between the positive purpose of Hume's thought and the meta-literary intention of Cervantes as the author of Don Quixote, and upon delving into this matter he concludes that despite the differences between both authors, given the social context, the sources and the forms of expression, in both cases it is about writing to promote a selective and careful reading of previous literature, since the imagination tends to behave in an irrational or abnormal way, especially when it comes to literature or philosophy, whose influences are so powerful that can disrupt both the mind and the body of the reader, so, if due care is not taken, instead of promoting aesthetic judgment, the ability to judge in general can be disrupted.

In both cases the issue is treated with humor and irony. What is proposed is to assume the rationality that prevails in the modern world, knowing that it is not the only possible world and that human reason is neither unlimited nor absolute. The madness of Don Quixote and the skepticism of Hume are enough as proof of this.
