Confucius (551 – 479 BC) was a practical and deliberately limited philosopher who did not pretend to see beyond reality; even philosophical speculations about God and the destiny of man were not the object of his research. Precisely in contrast to the pragmatic school of Confucius, the spiritualist school of Lao-Tse emerged. Tao Te Ching (King). The Book of Tao and Tea, a work by Lao Tzu or Lao-Tse, the greatest young philosopher, is considered the bible of the Taoist religion, a kind of religion without philosophy. This book, divided into 81 chapters, contains the highest expression of Chinese thought, constituting a complete philosophical system, enclosing a metaphysics that recognizes and describes in the Tao the first cause and the supreme good of the universe, a mortal (Tea) that indicates to man the change to reach an end, and a policy that indicates the path that every government must follow to achieve the well-being of the people. Thus Tao comes to mean sense, reason, God, Te can be interpreted as power or virtue, and King can be translated as book or Bible. These three words have come to be translated as Dissertation concerning the right principle and its action. This work, incomprehensible to some, is a profound treatise, containing a high philosophical value tending to elevate character and spirit. Here, the author makes a distinction between superior and inferior virtue, finding in the first, three treasures: love, temperance and humility, and in the second, humanity, justice and rites. It contains a series of maxims that will help the reader to be better, such as the one that says: The man who lives in a hurry dies too soon. Without a doubt, reading it can contribute something to our soul.
