In recent years, theology has tried to legitimize itself by absorbing the methods and findings of social science. The author's purpose is to lay the foundations to recover a theology "with its own voice," that is, a theology which, while being aware of its socially constructed nature, is able to articulate a discourse independent of the social sciences._x000D_

Milbank begins by noting that theology has taken uncritically the presuppositions of modern sociology (scientific and humanistic speeches) and adopted as their own secular reason, implicitly renounced the faith in transcendence. From these assumptions, the author conducts a critical analysis of the genesis of the main forms of secular reason (from Plato to Deleuze) and shows how the alleged autonomy of the secular actually conceals a constant dialogue with Christianity, and how social theories "scientific" or antiteologías theologies are also hidden. In short, Milbank aims to expose the intrigue of the social dialogue between theology and secular theology, their interdependencies and its paradoxes. In affirming the characteristics of particular theological thought from St. Augustine, the author emphasizes the theology right to maintain their intellectual tradition in dialogue with the humanities. The task of theology so conceived as a social science, according to Milbank, the difference would be to articulate Christian way to recover the lost original. Their main tasks were to be three: re-narrating the Christian mythos, re-state the Christian logos, and re-convene the Christian praxis.
