That we are not citizens, but subjects, and that citizenship constitutes an unfulfilled ideal is an affirmation with which it is easy to agree. But the present book supports an even less rewarding thesis: that "citizen" and "citizenship" are, in themselves, mystifying concepts forged to make up the deformed and monstrous face of the political. Antonio Valdecantos argues that the duality of a secular and an ecclesiastical order was modernly transformed into that of State and market, the latter being the natural successor of the Church. Thus, the medieval doctrine of the supremacy of ecclesiastical over secular power expresses the truth of contemporary domination, where the power of the market governs the sphere of the political. But this book does not defend any emancipatory program to establish a regime of true citizenship, but, through an alternative theory of space, time and public language, think about the conditions under which the subject could face the political as a a definitive and irredeemable evil. According to Valdecantos, the day when the subjects repudiated all legitimizing language and made fun of it without reverence, we would be faced with the most insidious and, perhaps, the most fecund resistance.
