Sentimental Journey describes the travels of a bewildered intellectual through Russia, Persia, Ukraine and the Caucasus during the period of the Russian Revolution. A valuable historical document for its first-hand account of events during the period 1917-1922, it is also an important experimental literary work, a memoir in the form of a novel. Sometimes lyrical, disturbing, ironic and erudite, it is a singular book by one of the most recognizable and influential voices in twentieth-century Russian literature. As a memory or chronicle of the Russian Revolution and the First World War, Sentimental Journey is constructed in an atypical way by a witness who, fortunately for us, has no pretense of impartiality. Most narrative matter is not composed of the narration of experience, but rather theoretical and critical digressions to illuminate history with truth: erratic, digressive and aberrant, like the events that changed the history of the twentieth century. In this way, if travel literature served Laurence Sterne to reveal the impressions of the traveler Yorick in his own Sentimental Journey, Shklovski uses the theoretical-literary discourse that he handled so much to build a subjectivity immersed in revolution and war. After all, there was no more effective way to account for his own experience than to apply the formal analysis with which he analyzed Defoe, Cervantes and psychoanalysis, but applied to all the Russian reality that surrounded him.
