Reale proposes an interpretation of the so-called "unwritten doctrines" of Plato opposed to the teaching embodied in the written dialogue, so that the latter must be read from the budgets of those. According to him, the doctrines "unwritten" are the true pinnacle of Platonic thought, which was exposed routinely but only orally, for it argues that, although we have all written works of Plato, we know through it his real thought, to look for in his oral teachings at the Academy (schematically announced in the Metaphysics of Aristotle). This new reading is a total change of scientific paradigm explaining the thinking of Plato.
