Kanada begins where most of the novels of World War II end: with the end of the conflict. Because in 1945 the killings are interrupted, but another tragedy begins that has aroused much less literature: the impossible return home of millions of survivors. The protagonist of Kanada has lost everything: family, purposes, memories. It only has its old residence, an improvised refuge in which it will end up enclosing itself to protect itself of an indefinite threat. Surrounded by neighbors who soon resemble their saviors and their jailers, he will undertake a journey that will take him to the dark country of Kanada from where he claims to proceed. What do we do when circumstances compel us to perform acts that we never thought we could do? How can we recover our identity when everything has been taken away? Is it possible to return to a world whose rules have ceased to make sense? Juan Gómez Bárcena, with his second novel, and drinking from authors such as Borges, Vonnegut or Martin Amis, dares to tackle one of the darkest episodes of our history from a new perspective, which does not focus on the executioners or in the physical act of extermination, but in the guilt that suffers the victims.
