The Gold Tarot or Visconti-Sforza Tarot stands out for being the most complete of the ancient tarot decks that are preserved. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of his marriage, in 1451, Francesco Sforza commissioned the well-known artist Bonifacio Bembo to create a deck of cards in his honor. Originally used as a card game, over the next three centuries these cards became a divination tool, which is how they are most commonly used today.
Each exquisitely painted card in the Visconti-Sforza deck is a tiny masterpiece. The scenes are richly enhanced with gold leaf, and made with pigments made from powdered lapis lazuli, malachite, and other precious minerals.
