Hubert Damisch

Hubert Damisch (Prague, 1920 - Paris, 1917). Philosopher specialized in Aesthetics and Art History, he was professor at the École des hautes études en Sciences sociales from 1975 to 1996. He studied at the Sorbonne with Maurice Merleau-Ponty and then with Pierre Francastel. In 1967 he founded the Cercle d’histoire / théorie de l’art (later to become the Center d'histoire et théorie des arts) at EHESS. His works, focused, among other areas, on the history and theory of painting, architecture, photography and the museum, constitute essential references for a theory of visual representations.
