María José Serrano is a doctor in Spanish Philology, professor of General Linguistics at the University of La Laguna and a specialist in sociolinguistics and syntactic variation. In addition to numerous articles in this specialty, she is the author of "Syntactic variation: verbal forms of the hypothetical period in Spanish" (1994), "Syntactic change and linguistic prestige" (1996), "Approach to the grammar of Spanish discourse" ( 2002), and editor of the volume «Studies of syntactic variation» (1999).
