Our struggle against the factory is not only a struggle to leave it, but to never have to enter it. Our struggle against the family is to leave it, but not to free us to go to the factory. This is our demand for autonomy, our autonomous class perspective, grounded in this total rejection of the capitalist organization of our lives, of our work. This rejection is a rejection of our strategy as a strategy of defense. We can only develop our strategy if we go on the offensive, because women will not support us in anything other than going on the offensive, and because it is the only way to win. In the most literal sense, women have no time for anything other than this; we have long dragged the chains of the double shift, and its weight is increasing. Our feminism embraces the totality of exploitation, in the home and outside of it, and therefore encompasses the totality of the working-class struggle, in the home and outside of it. No working-class organization has done this before. Selma James, a militant from a very young age in the Johnson-Forest Tendency, an activist in the Caribbean and Great Britain, was one of the initiators of the International Campaign for Wages for Housework, along with Mariarosa Dalla Costa, Silvia Federici, and many others. This book is a journey through her thought and activism: from the seminal "The Place of Woman" (1952) to "Women and the Subversion of Community" (1972), "A Perspective for Victory" (1973), and "Sex, Race, and Class" (1974) from the Campaign's period; from the analysis of specific activist experiences to her reflections on the Global Women's Strike, an organization in which she has participated since its founding in 2000. Always lucid and incisive, James's notes on feminism, Marxism, anti-racism, and organization are extremely useful in our days for considering an autonomous class politics.
