Lili is a thirty-five-year-old woman who lives with Yukio, her husband, whom she hasn't loved for some time. Haruna, her best friend, has been in love with Yukio ever since she met him, and Lili suspects they are both cheating on her, but decides to do nothing about it. One night she meets Akira, a younger man, with whom she begins a relationship. The stories of the four lovers are subtly intertwined in Fragile Lives, Dark Nights, in which Hiromi Kawakami, with her sensual and concise prose, invites us to reflect on loneliness and the nature of human relationships.
