Cees Nooteboom

Cees Nooteboom (The Hague, 1933) is one of the greatest and most original contemporary Dutch writers: translator of Spanish, Catalan, French, German and American theater poetry; author of novels, poetry, essays and travel books. His work, in constant reflection on Europeanism and nationalism, has been translated into more than twenty languages.
He has obtained, among other recognitions, the Aristeon European Prize for Literature (1993) for The Next Story, the Bordewijk Prize (1981), the Pegasus Prize for Literature (1982), the Grinzane Cavour Prize for Narrative (1994), the Medal of Gold from the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid (2003), the European Poetry Prize (2008), the Dutch Literature Prize (2009) and the highest prize awarded in travel literature, the Chatwin Prize (2010), the prestigious International Mondello Prize (2017) and the Formentor Prize for Letters 2020. In France he has been named a Knight of the Legion of Honor and is Doctor Honoris Causa by the Freie Universität in Berlin. He lives in constant nomadism between Holland, Spain and Germany.
