His stage name Loki, McGarvey is a Scottish rapper and social commentator, who grew up in Pollok, South Glasgow, and studied Journalism at Glasgow Clyde College. Between 2004 and 2006 he wrote and presented eight programs on the causes of antisocial behavior and social deprivation for BBC Radio Scotland. She has worked with the youth organization Volition teaching young people how to rap, and in 2012 she conducted a power-rap workshop for schools, encouraging young people to explore important topics through music and words. In 2009 he was part of the Truth Commission on Poverty organized in Glasgow. In 2015 he spent six months as a resident rapper in the Violence Reduction Unit (an institution created by the Scottish Police to combat violent behavior within the community). In April 2016, McGarvey appeared in the documentary The Divide talking about his alcoholism and the impact it has had on his life. In October 2017, he claimed lack of support for the working class and disadvantaged communities from Creative Scotland, the lead agency that funds Scottish art companies and artists. His critically acclaimed book Poverty Safari was awarded the 2018 Orwell Prize and the judges said it was exactly "the play Orwell would have wanted him to win." McGarvey was an activist during the 2014 Scottish independence referendum.
