He has illustrated more than 40 children's books, of which he has written four. He was born and raised in China, although he currently resides in New York. According to Young, his illustrations are inspired by the philosophy of Chinese painting. For his book, Lon Po Po, he received the Caldecott Medal in 1990. Seven blind mice, published by Ediciones Ekaré, is also Caldecott's Book of Honor.
