The Sicilian Elvira Mancuso (Caltanissetta, 1867-1958) was a follower of the verismo of Giovanni Verga and Luigi Capuana. She started writing under a pseudonym in women's magazines. Between 1906, when Annuzza the teacher appeared for the first time (with the subtitle Vecchia storia… unlikely), and 1909 she published her most important texts: Resede e ortiche, Sulla condizione della donna Borghese in Sicilia, Bagattelle… Under Mussolini's fascism, quietly withdrew and devoted himself entirely to teaching. His only novel, The Teacher Annuzza, was going to be recovered by Einaudi in the early eighties of the last century by decision of Italo Calvino and with a foreword by Leonardo Sciascia, but finally the Sellerio publishing house would rescue it years later, given the great interest of Elvira Sellerio for this key work in Sicilian literature of the time.
