Harold Entwistle

Harold Entwistle

Harold Entwistle (1923-2015) was an Anglo-Canadian philosopher and sociologist of education, known for arguing in defense of a classical school from a progressive position. Professor of Comparative Education at Sir John Williams University (later integrated into Concordia University) until his retirement, his influence within the field of critical educational studies is indisputable. A staunch defender of an education rich in content and academic demands for the working classes, his positioning earned him both criticism and very notable evaluations from both conservative and progressive positions in academia. Today, his texts are a mandatory reference and discussion for the sociology of education, didactics and pedagogy. His publications include Child-centred education (1970), Education, work and leisure (1970), Political education in a democracy (1971), Class, culture and education (1978) and, above all, Antonio Gramsci: Conservative schooling for radical politics (1979).
