João Antônio (João Antônio Ferreira Filho), writer and journalist, was born in the suburbs of San Pablo in a poor family on January 27, 1937 It was early recognized by critics for its exceptional work, which earned him numerous awards. In 1963 his book "Malagueta, Perus and Bacanazo" received (unprecedented in the literary history of Brazil) Two Jabuti Awards: by revelation and best storybook. Considered by his contemporaries as the first urban novelist, João Antônio literature devoted to exploring the reality of working class neighborhoods, the life of the underworld, the marginalized and rejected by society. With extraordinary linguistic work, managed to reveal that world from within, crudely and at the same time with a deep lyricism. Author of "Leão-de-Chácara" (1975), "Finger Hard" (1982), "Abraçado ao meu rancor" (1986), "Keeper" (1992) among many other volumes, also his journalistic work was linked to the world the periphery. In October 1996 his body was found several days after his death at his home in Copacabana, where he'd taken up residence before.
