Professor of Sociology at the University of Lancaster. Considered as one of the most relevant sociologists on the current scene, his research focused in his last years on the study of the new paradigms of mobility and its impact on the society of the future. In this area, he also reflected on the phenomenon of global tourism in terms of consumption and mass movements, as well as on the energy and oil sector, and its effect on society and the environment.

He published over forty works, such as Mobilities (Polity, 2007), Mobile Lives (Routledge, 2010, with Anthony Elliott), Offshoring (Polity, 2014), or Post Petroleum (Loco, 2014). A world without cars has been translated into Spanish (Peninsula, 2011, with Kingsley Dennis). She is one of the most respected voices in mobility research in the social sciences. His books Sociology beyond Society (2000) and Mobile Lives (2010) are considered key works in the so-called "mobility turn" and are widely cited in numerous fields of research.
