Jorge Edwards (Santiago de Chile, 1931) is one of the most important figures in current literature in the Spanish language. He studied law and philosophy at the University of Chile and at Princeton and between 1957 and 1973 held various diplomatic posts in Latin America and Europe. As a writer he has cultivated both the novel and the story as the essay, and has been translated into several languages. He has received, among other awards, the National Literature Prize of Chile (1994) and the Miguel de Cervantes Prize (1999).
