Born in Leningrad (today Saint Petersburg) in 1940 and exiled from the former Soviet Union in 1972, Brodsky, poet and essayist, received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1987. He died in New York in 1996 and is buried in the San Michele Cemetery in Venice.
