Research professor of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) at the Alicante Institute of Neurosciences (CSIC-UMH), of which he is its director. His research career has been developed in the United States (Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York) and in Spain (Ramón y Cajal Hospital and CSIC —Cajal Institute and Institute of Neurosciences—). His scientific activity has focused on understanding neuronal communication processes, through which neurons transmit information and regulate their excitability. His work has addressed the study of neuronal receptors for neurotransmitters, using both electrophysiological and cell and molecular biology techniques. Member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), of the European DANA Alliance for the Brain and of the editorial committees of Neuron and Neuroscience journals, he has been distinguished by the Health Sciences Foundation for his work in neurobiology; by the “Príncipe Felipe” Science Museum Foundation with the Cátedra Santiago Grisolía award; with the Gabriel Alonso de Herrera Award for Excellence, awarded by the Castilla-La Mancha Community Board to recognize his professional career; with the CEOE Science Award (2005) and with the Alberto Sols Award (2006). He has recently been named president-elect of the Spanish Society of Neurosciences and a member of the Academia Europaea (SENC).
