Judith Shklar (1928-1992) was born in Riga, capital of Latvia, within a Jewish family of German culture. His youth was marked by constant flight that took the family to emigrate to Sweden, Japan and Canada, where he eventually settled but not before passing through a detention center for illegal immigrants in Seattle. After his doctorate at Harvard University, Shklar became the first woman professor in the department of Political Science. In 1990 he also became the first president of the American Political Science Association.
