She lives in Los Angeles, where she has taught classes and workshops for 30 years, 14 of them in the studio she ran with her husband, John Hoskins. His workshops for directors include Acting for Directors and the advanced workshops on Script Analysis and Rehearsal Techniques. In his workshops for actors he emphasizes stage work, acting technique, improvisation and reading for casting, as well as exercises and analysis of Shakespeare's plays. He also developed the Laboratory of Actors and Directors, where both put their teachings into practice. He has also traveled with his workshops throughout Europe, Canada and other cities in the United States, including New York, San Francisco and Seattle.
Thousands of directors, writers and actors from around the world have attended Judith Weston's workshops or consulted her to prepare their projects. Among his student directors are Alejandro González Iñárritu, winner in 2015 of two Oscars for best film and best director for Birdman; Steve McQueen, director of 12 Years a Slave, winner of the Oscar for best picture in 2014; Aya DuVernay, director of Selma, nominated for an Oscar for best picture in 2015; Andrew Stanton, writer and director of Wall-E and Finding Nemo; Fred Toye, director of series such as The Good Wife, Lost and Ghost Whisperer, and Julius Ramsay, director of The Walking Dead. He currently focuses more on private consulting to directors in pre-production, with projects that include both studio and independent or television work, to help them clarify their directing options and prepare for cast selection and rehearsals. He also consults for director-writers and private training for actors. Occasionally he still participates as a visiting professor in other latitudes.
