Kees van Dongen, pseudonym for Cornelis Théodorus Marie van Dongen (Delfshaven, January 26, 1877-Monte Carlo, May 28, 1968), was a Dutch painter. He settled in Paris in 1897 and obtained French nationality in 1929. He was a member of the Fovista group and, for a brief period, of the German expressionist movement Die Brücke.
Although dark tones dominated his work at first, influenced by his Dutch upbringing and his admiration for the figure of Rembrandt, his palette soon began to expand due to the connection of his work with Fauvism. In fact, the contacts with the components of this current became effective in 1906 and he exhibited with them until 1912. At the same time he also related to the German expressionists, with whom he would expose in 1908 after receiving the invitation of the group Die Brücke through Max Pechstein.
