Laurie Lee (Slad, Gloucestershire, 1914-1997). Laurence Edward Alan «Laurie» Lee. English poet, novelist and screenwriter, who grew up in the town of Slad. His most famous work is the autobiographical trilogy that compose Cider with Rosie (1959), As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning (1969) and A Moment of War (1991). The first volume narrates his childhood in the valley of Slad. The second novel deals with the departure of his house to London and his first visit to Spain in 1935, and the third of his return to Spain in December 1937 to join the International Brigades. Upon his return to England, he began his writing career. With the outbreak of World War II he volunteered for military service in the United Kingdom, but was rejected because of his epilepsy, a disease that would torment him throughout his life. Through his connections with the world of art and literature he met his wife Katherine Polge.
