Lawrence Anthony

(South Africa, 1950 - 2012) International conservationist, ecologist, explorer, and successful author. He was the head of conservation at the Thula Thula Game Reserve in Zululandia, South Africa, and the founder of The Earth Organization, a private and independent collective, dedicated to international conservation and the environment, strong scientific orientation Anthony was recognized for complex conservation initiatives, including the rescue of the Baghdad Zoo during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and negotiations with the famous Lord's Resistance Army , a rebel army in southern Sudan, to raise awareness of the environment and protect endangered species, such as the last specimen of the northern white rhino. Details of its conservation activities appeared regularly in regional and international media including the CNN, CBS, BBC, Al Jazeera and Sky TV and featured in magazines and newspapers such as Reade r’s Digest, Smithsonian, etc.

Anthony died of a heart attack at 61, just before the gala dinner he had hosted in Durban to raise international awareness of rhino poaching. After his death, there were reports that some of the elephants he worked with went to his family's home, according to the way elephants often mourn the death of one of their own.
