Lucy Jones

Seismologist and recognized authority on earthquake science and safety issues in California. She has worked with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and has been a research associate at Caltech's Seismology Laboratory since 1983. She currently works as a scientific advisor for risk reduction in the area of Natural Hazards of the USGS. In 2014, she partnered on behalf of the USGS with the City of Los Angeles to serve as Seismic Risk Advisor to Mayor Eric Garcetti. She served as a commissioner of the California Seismic Safety Commission (CSSC), which advises the governor on seismic safety and serves on the California Earthquake Prediction Evaluation Council. He has received many awards, such as the Alquist Award from the California Earthquake Safety Foundation, the USGS Shoemaker Award, the 2007 Award of Merit from the Los Angeles County Emergency Preparedness Commission, the 2015 Ambassador Award from the American Geophysical Union, or the 2017 Distinguished Conference Award from the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute. She is the author of more than one hundred articles on seismological research. Jones is the founder of the Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society, with a mission to foster the understanding and application of scientific information in creating more resilient communities.
