Martin Maier (Mebkirch, 1960), entered the Jesuit order at age nineteen. From 1989 to 1991 he worked as a parish priest in rural El Salvador, where he was very impressed by the movement of liberation theology and the legacy of the person of Oscar Romero. He received his doctorate in theology in 1993 with a thesis on Jon Sobrino and Ignacio Ellacuria, and later visiting professor at American University in San Salvador. Since 1989 he is editor of the journal Stimmen der Zeit.
