Pierre Bonte

Pierre Bonte (August 25, 1942 in Annœullin - November 4, 2013) was a French ethnologist and Emeritus Director of research at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), attached to the Social Anthropology Laboratory (EHESS/CNRS/Collège de France, Paris).

In 1991, he published the Dictionary of Ethnology and Anthropology, a reference work co-published with Michel Izard. His work has focused in particular on kinship, work, nomadism, the pastoral dimension of the societies studied or even sacrificial systems. During the 1970s, his thinking was marked by Marxist anthropology and the research of Louis Dumont.
