Robert Crumb (Philadelphia, 1943) is the most important cartoonist in American underground comics. Best known for his unmistakable narration and uncompromising theme, he is the creator of Devil Girl, Mr. Natural, Zap Comics, the iconic "Keep on Truckin '" cartoon on the t-shirts, the design for the Cheap Thrills album cover by Big Brother & the Holding Co. (with Janis Joplin), and Fritz the cat, protagonist of the controversial drawings for adults by the animator Ralph Bakshi. Crumb, an award-winning documentary directed by Terry Zwigoff, made him an established pop culture figure so reluctantly that he ended up emigrating. He currently lives in France.
