Sylvia Wynter

Sylvia Wynter was born in Cuba. Her scholarly work is highly poetic, expository, and complex. Her work attempts to elucidate the development and maintenance of colonial modernity and modern man. She weaves together science, philosophy, literary theory, and critical race theory to explain how the European man came to be regarded as the epitome of humanity, “Man 2” or “the figure of man.” Wynter’s theoretical framework has changed and deepened over the years.
In 2010, Sylvia Wynter was awarded the Order of Jamaica (OJ) for her services to the fields of education, history, and culture.
