Badiou's main concerns—the question of the event, the need for philosophical-political militancy, and the theme of the political subject—respond to certain aspects of current historical conjunctures. His work can be seen as a response to the neoliberal attempt to definitively close historical thought, an attempt that sought to prevent any new form of historical change. Although Badiou rejects the traditional notion of possibility, given that, for him, the event is that which is "impossible," that which is not included within the framework of a given situation, his work insists on the possibility of new historical events and changes. It can also be seen as a theoretical intervention in the discussion about the meaning of the formation of collective subjects today, especially in an era of resurgent mass movements and anti-capitalist aspirations.
