Aline and Valcour is the first novel signed by the Marquis de Sade, written during his stay in the Bastille prison. In an epistolary way, it narrates the loves of the two characters that give it its name, while the stories of many others intermingle, forming a story that is not unique, since the result is actually two almost independent ones: The Story of Aline and Valcour and The Story of Sainville and Leonore. Sade was harshly criticized for the content of the work, considered full of vices and far from conforming to the morals of the time.
