The Monastery of Our Lady of the Atlas, founded in 1938 in Tibhirine, was the scene of one of the many bloody crimes of the Algerian civil war: in 1996, seven of the nine monks were killed by the Armed Islamic Group (GIA), included his superior, Christian de Chergé.
