"Hope and disappointment are both daughters of evil living and reproduce it indefinitely. This book is an attempt to get out of that circle, against which I only know two dispositions of the soul: hopelessness and happiness. And only two dimensions of time: the present and eternity. In reflecting on all this, I have had the impression that these two dispositions and these two dimensions were not as separate from each other as might at first be believed, and that even in rigor it was possible to think them only as a result of their Mutual relationship.
